Venezuela, por acci\u00f3n del movimiento conservador denominado La Cosiata, se separa oficialmente de la Gran Colombia y P\u00e1ez asume la presidencia de la naciente Rep\u00fablica. Se ve entonces obligado a combatir levantamientos de antiguos compa\u00f1eros de armas, someter a salteadores de caminos como el famoso bandolero Dionisio Cisneros y eliminar los alzamientos realistas que persisten. Act\u00faa como legislador, fomenta la instauraci\u00f3n del Congreso, propone leyes para mejorar la econom\u00eda y hace intentos de restaurar la paz en el pa\u00eds. Gracias a una memoria extraordinaria y a una copiosa documentaci\u00f3n oficial y epistolar, P\u00e1ez convierte su propio pasado en fuente de estudio de la historia. Predomina aqu\u00ed el hombre de Estado que se propuso ser, aunque por momentos se percibe la a\u00f1oranza de las batallas en las que se hizo leyenda. No es casual que en los a\u00f1os posteriores se le llamase \u201cEl Le\u00f3n de Payara\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jos\u00e9 Antonio P\u00e1ez<\/strong> Nacido en Curpa, Apure, en 1790, se incorpor\u00f3 al ej\u00e9rcito republicano en 1813. Su liderazgo y sus acciones en el campo de batalla lo hicieron merecedor de r\u00e1pidos ascensos militares, el respeto de sus pares y el temor del enemigo. Fue cerebro y coraz\u00f3n del ej\u00e9rcito de llaneros que por tierra, a caballo y a pie cruzaron los Andes, recorrieron buena parte de Suram\u00e9rica y llegaron hasta las costas peruanas para desalojar a las fuerzas espa\u00f1olas. Su acci\u00f3n el 24 de junio de 1821 en Carabobo fue decisiva. Fue presidente de la Rep\u00fablica en tres oportunidades y figura predominante en la pol\u00edtica venezolana hasta 1863, cuando la firma del Tratado de Coche pone fin a la Guerra Federal.
