Every year, the International Book Fair of Venezuela (FILVEN) works a miracle by tearing down the invisible wall rising between the readers and the writers they have followed up for a long time and feel to know alreadya friendship forged by words printed on paper. This miracle becomes more significant when it comes to writers coming from other parts of the world, since it would be very hard for a common man or woman to get in contact with, or directly hear, without electronic intermediaries, the voice of the old acquaintances they have got to know by flipping infinite pages. Thanks to the 2015 FILVEN, this time we were able to hear that particular Puerto Rican accent, with such a catchy cadence as its world-famous son, which Venezuelans keep in a special place of our musical memory. Here, not even shyness may hamper this meeting because the friendly atmosphere favors human contact without even thinking about it. In the same way, with a mojito in a hand, the talk with Antonio Nadal took place; a pedagogue, a scholar of the folkloric music of Puerto Rico and a longstanding untiring social and cultural activist, who is recognized as one of the most active members of the independence movement of his country. After his participation in the conference “Escritores caníbales ¿a quién leemos?” (“Cannibal Writers ¿Whom Are We Reading To?”), along with the poetess, essay writer and translator Aurea María Sotomayor, Antonio Nadal told us how excited he was about being invited to this Book Fair edition. He mainly felt this way because there was an air of revolution which is evidenced in the transformation of consciousness taking place in the land of Bolivar and Chavez, who also, according Nadal, drove the fight for the decolonization of the island during his life via his brave stances against imperialism. And so, after a pleasant talk while hearing the Puerto Rican son playing in the background about Nadal’s life and especially about the work he carries out in the classroom and the political front, focused on achieving a better world everyone desires, Professor Antonio Nadal said goodbye promising us a reunion during the conference on Puerto Rican music which is going to be delivered by himself within the framework of the 2015 FILVEN, next Sunday.
