DAY 10. CESAR RENGIFO’S THEATER WORK TAKES THE FLOOR IN FILVEN 2015

All the serenity you can feel during a fresh evening, lying in the spaces around the water mirror of the Museum of Fines Arts of Caracas, suddenly gets disturbed by the aching shout of Cesar Rengifo, the honored author of Filven 2015 and whose literary and plastic work that always denounced an unfair, unequal an violent Venezuelan society was the main subject of the conference entitled Dramaturgia y resignificación de la obra de César Rengifo (Drama Art and re-significance of Cesar Rengifo’s work), addressed by Roger Herrera, a professor who has devoted his life to the study of this giant of the Venezuelan arts, and to the staging of his theatre plays all over the country, as well. According to Herrera, professor of the Bolivarian University of Venezuela, his decision to devote himself to the study of Cesar Rengifo’s work lies in the fact that he was “looking to discover, in him, a liberating word, expressed through his wordy speech”. Rengifo “was a bitter person” in his daily life, Herrera said, an attitude totally understandable in a man as sensible towards social issues as him, who really felt the people’s suffering and struggled, through his art, to try to wake society up and fought against oppression suffered by the Venezuelan people from the beginning of its history. However, Rengifo never let behind aesthetic aspects in his work which, along with his social denounce, created a harmonious ensemble that reserved him a place among the greatest names of the Venezuelan arts. In fact, Rengifo’s work shows his broad knowledge of the arts tradition; for instance, you can easily find in his works a Greek chorus or forces of nature becoming another animated character, fine resources Rengifo used, but turning them into a powerful voice, the voice of our people that was lowered down and suddenly raises, to banish those vices destroying the society of his time. According to Herrera, all Cesar Rengifo’s work deserves to be recovered from the oblivion that local academics sent him to, prior to this revolutionary process of changes, worried as they were to look towards Europe and North America literary production. In the contrary, behold the Venezuela International Book Fair 2015 honoring this giant Venezuelan artist and fighter called Cesar Rengifo.
